thornbridge hall - a brief history

12th to the late 18th century seat of the Longsdon family

1790 to 1859 Morewood family - enlarged the house

1859 Frederick Craven - rebuilt the house in Jacobean style and installed the William Morris/Burne-Jones window in the Great Hall

1896 George Marples (sheffield business man & lawyer) - enlarged the house to nearly its present form, built lodges & cottages, landscaped the park & gardens, added his own private railway station, & acquired the Watson buffet fountain from Chatsworth

1929 Charles Boot (Sheffield entrepreneur) - added items from Clumber Park & panelling from Derwent Hall

1945 Sheffield City Council - ran thornbridge as a teacher training college, an educational centre and conference centre

1997 The Hunt family - started restoration work to the gardens and removed inappropriate additions to the house to reveal its proper proportions

2002 Now owned by Emma and Jim Harrison and is both a private family home and an exclusive venue for events.
