Coiled Basketry is a global and ancient craft of producing useful baskets and mats, which often used locally sourced plant materials including grasses, rushes, leaves and bark.
Design and create your own coiled basket or coaster using ‘Lazy’ or ‘Plain’ stitch, with a choice of colour, shape and stitches, and maybe make one for your loved one as a gift. In this workshop we will use raffia, which is the fibrous part of a palm tree leaf, and some traditional techniques to make a coiled basketry item. These are created by binding around a core material in a spiral shape with a needle, the basket is then worked into the required shape as it develops. depending on the desired size of your coiled basket, you may need to complete it at home.
All materials and equipment are provided. This workshop is suitable for age 7+.
Tickets include all-day garden entry and discount off lunch at Quackers cafe
